Designing the Whole Quilt Thursday NS/ALL

Designing the Whole QuiltStudy the composition of the whole cloth (white on white) style quilt and learn the techniques of drawing designs (feathers, cables and other motifs). You will practice the techniques for drawing the individual motifs and will design a 40" square that can be used either as a single piece or become the center of a larger quilt. Most supplies will be provided by the instructor (Kit fee $7.50).

The Quilting Edge: Borders and Binding Friday PM SM/ALL

Accurately applied borders and binding are essential in maintaining the symmetry of a finished quilt. Uneven borders and binding, especially the corner treatments of the binding, can often detract from the beauty of the rest of the quilt. This workshop addresses both of these important parts of the quilt- making process. Students will learn to accurately measure for the final borders as well as for sashing and borders within the quilt. They will also and practice various methods for making good mitered corners and joining the binding strips. This is a hands-on class where students will leave with samples of the techniques covered in the class. Kit containing all basic materials needed $15.00.

Can't Stop the Quilt Saturday SM/ALL

Often accidents happen that result in exciting and new quilts making styles or techniques. This class is the result of one of those times. A friend asked to learn to quilt and, not knowing his skill level, I chose a simple stripped design in which various widths of fabric were cut, sewed together, and re-cut to make a 36" X 45" quilt. This resulted in a stack of smaller pieced strips which were too much to toss. These strips were then re-cut and sashing and borders added to create a second quilt. What was learned was the accuracy of cutting and piecing, the application of sashing and borders to assure that the various parts remained true to the square and highlighted the simplicity of the center bar type design. The emphasis in this class is the importance of making sure seams are all consistent and the cutting of the subsequent strips is also accurate. You will make two small (36X45") quilt tops. Fabric Kit $20.

Lecture: Judging the Quilt Thursday Evening
What do judges look for in the process of judging the quilt? What makes one quilt "better" than the other? What factors elevate one quilt from ordinary to outstanding or excellent? This lecture will answer many of these questions and might even suggest ways an already completed quilt can be improved to elevate its standing next time it is entered into a quilt show. These same factors are also what most quilt makers want for any quilt they design and make. You will have the opportunity to evaluate examples of various types of quilts at the end of the lecture.
